Klimato | Climate-Smart Meals

Klimato is a powerful food sustainability solution designed for businesses to measure, report, and reduce your environmental footprint from food through our cutting-edge, science-backed solution. ISS at Accenture have been on a journey to reduce the carbon footprint of the food they serve with the help of Klimato. The carbon footprint of each meal is calculated and then this information is made available to everyone eating there to increase transparency and allow colleagues to make an informed decision. The project is financed by ISS. Since October 2024 the average carbon footprint per meal sold has reduced by 22% to 0.7 kg CO2e.

Ecologische impact
The project addresses climate impact, specifically the carbon reduction of food, as currently, 34% of global emissions come from the food sector.1 To stay consistent with the Paris Agreement’s goals (limiting warming to well below 2°C, and preferably to 1.5°C), global emissions in 2030 must decline by 28% relative to projected levels for the 2°C pathway, and 42 % relative to projections for the 1.5°C pathway.
Through Klimato, ISS at Accenture are able to calculate the carbon footprint of all the meals they serve, and by uploading their sales data on a monthly basis they are able to track their emissions and quickly see the impact their menu is having. The Klimato solution can be accessed through any web browser and is powered by renewable energy.

Maatschappelijke impact
Klimato supports social themes by making sustainability accessible and community-focused. Displaying the carbon footprint of each meal in the staff restaurant empowers employees of all ages and backgrounds to make informed, climate-friendly choices. This transparency sparks conversations about everyday actions and encourages stronger connections between colleagues. The initiative highlights that everyone can contribute to climate action through simple daily decisions. Younger generations, often leading on environmental issues, inspire others and help build a culture of shared responsibility. In this way, Klimato transforms ordinary office meals into meaningful opportunities for collective impact.

Zichtbaarheid
The Klimato project is communicated through displays in the staff restaurant, where each meal’s carbon footprint is shown alongside playful ‘Food Facts’ visuals that make the numbers tangible and easy to relate to. This approach turns sustainability into something visible, accessible, and fun, encouraging conversations between colleagues. It also stands out to visitors and partners, showcasing ISS’s commitment to sustainability in the heart of Zuidas. To keep improving, we’ve conducted employee surveys to gather feedback and explore new ways to communicate the message more effectively.

Schaalbaarheid
The ISS Netherlands & Klimato: Climate-Smart Meals project is highly scalable to all office restaurant locations globally as well as restaurants, hotels and any food businesses. The digital platform and simple communication tools make implementation easy, while maintaining consistent messaging and impact. Because food is a shared daily experience, Klimato can seamlessly integrate into workplaces and food businesses, encouraging sustainable choices everywhere.

There are collaboration opportunities with catering partners, hotels, restaurants to create a shared approach to sustainable dining. By exchanging insights and aligning goals, the project can help build a broader community movement around climate-friendly food.

Klimato can also positively influence other initiatives, such as zero-waste programs, Amsterdam’s protein transition, employee engagement strategies, and corporate sustainability goals, by making climate impact visible and actionable. Its approachable design and strong engagement potential make it a powerful catalyst for wider change beyond the restaurant.
